If you are in the human resource field you might be debating whether or not you need a degree or HR certifications to advance in your career. With so many certification options out there you might be confused about which ones to choose.

Professional in Human Resources (PHR)

This is a certification that is offered by the HR Certification Institute. PHR is geared to those that are responsible for HR management and program implementation. This certificate also ensures that applicable U.S. laws and regulations are being followed.

You will also learn more about employment planning, workforce planning, compensation, benefits, business management, business strategy, and labor relations. Before you go for this certification you have to have a minimum of one year HR experience with either a master's degree, four years experience with a high school diploma, or two years of experience with a bachelor's degree.

Once you get this certification, it is valid for three years. Keep in mind that getting HRCI certified will come with big advantages to you and your career. 

SHRM Certified Professional (CHRM-CP)

This certification is offered by the Society for Human Resource Management, which is a member-based organization. This is one of the two certifications that they offer. The goal of this certificate is to understand policy implementation, service delivery, and strategy.

This exam is four hours long and has 160 questions. The requirements to take the exam are three or four years of experience for those that have less than a bachelor's degree. 

Senior SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP)

This is the other certificate offered by the Society for Human Resource Management. It is to recognize HR professionals with advanced knowledge of human resource strategy. Someone with this certificate acts as an HR lead and knows how to deal with employee performance metrics.

The requirements for this certificate are six or seven years of experience for those with less than a bachelor's degree. 

Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)

This is another HRCI certification that covers similar topics as the PHR certificate we spoke about above. This certificate focuses on policymaking and strategy and the experience requirements are a lot more stringent. 

A candidate has to have at least four years of professional HR experience along with a master's degree. You can also have a bachelor's degree or a high school diploma along with increasing levels of experience.
